Community

Community healing is a huge part of every culture’s traditional healing. It is within community that we can garner our collective healing energy together and learn how to show up and hold one another through our healing journeys. Montana Honeylion is especially passionate about being a community herbalist and centering communal healing however she can. Whether it’s teaching classes at no cost for BIPOC community or serving people in no cost care days, Montana strives to center healing over profit in her herbalism approach.

In 2018, while Montana was still studying at Bastyr University, she met Rosemary Gladstar and was welcomed into a small gathering of women inside someone’s living room. Rosemary said this was how she and most of her herbal peers learned the ropes of herbalism: through collective sharing with one another in a non-hierarchal way. Soon after, pregnant and in need of community, Montana started her own “Women’s Herbal Nights” out of her own living room in Kingston, Washington. These were all-ages no-cost monthly potluck gatherings of anyone who was femme or female-identifying. Eventually, the pandemic had its own plans and the Women’s Herbal Nights ceased to be.

However, in January 2020, Montana Honeylion joined the Canoe Journey Herbalists and through the Indigenous Herbal Pathway, found herself immersed in indigenous and BIPOC herbal community for the first time in her life. This community became a major catalyst for Montana’s own healing and left her with a deep, impactful demonstration of what community healing could be. Soon after she found herself driving down to Tacoma with her newborn and 3-year-old daughter to volunteer on two of the indigenous farms, The Native Sharing Garden and Rose Island Farm, to be with beloved indigenous kin while communing with plants. It was in these experiences, she learned how sustainable non-nuclear family could be and what kinship really felt like.

As life has progressed, Montana has enjoyed volunteering with the Canoe Journey Herbalists who provide herbal medicine to BIPOC at no cost as well as teaching herbal classes through the BIPOC Family Excursions program in Jefferson County. She also is an adjunct traditional foods educator with the Center for Indigenous Midwifery and loves to teach herbal classes or create herbal stations with indigenous and BIPOC organizations serving local community.

In May 2022, Montana and Nico Honeylion purchased a tiny cabin in the woods on a half acre of land in Indianola (Suquamish land.) They hosted a Cedar Camp through the Canoe Journey Herbalists in which four cedar trees were honored and traditionally stripped before Nico and his One Earth Tree Care crew intentionally removed them to create space for their herbal garden and also to mill and create a community gazebo space for future classes. In this gazebo you will find Montana offering herbal classes and occasional community care days.
